Let the good times flow!

2 words I have been dreading for a while now.

Potty.

Training.

I know my kid, I know him (and should) better than anyone else.  This kid has been stubborn since the day he was born.
Mom, you want me to breastfeed? Nope, I will fall asleep every time you try, but give me the bottle and I am hungry all of the sudden.
The kid that did not walk on his own until he was 15 months, but was walking behind a push toy at 12 months.  We all knew he could do it and he knew he could do it, just was not ready to let go yet.

Then comes the potty training.  I do not understand but people put an age on potty training.  Like oh your kid is 2, and he is not going on the potty?  Tsk. Tsk.  Well I knew that it would take some time for Logan to even want to go on the potty.  We introduced the potty right before he turned 2.

He had no interest in it.  He thought it was just a naked chair where he read books before bath.  The one or 2 times he did happen to go in it, we made such a huge deal about it.  Stickers, treats, the whole nine.  That did not seem to impress him. He would have off weeks where he refused to sit on it at all.  We started really trying at 2 1/2 and explained to him that big boys wear underwear.  He was not too impressed with them and we would explain to him over and over, you can't pee pee or poo poo in your big boy underwear and he would say ok.  Not 15 seconds after we put them on they would be soaked and he would tell us he was wet but would continue to play, not seeming to care about his saggy, soggy bottoms.  Frustrated and having tried almost everything, last week I made the decision that we would let him to pick out his own potty.  He would think it was cool.  We go to Target for him to pick out "Logan's special potty" and he picked out one that he could "flush" and sings a song when he goes in it.  Which I must say, he picked out the most expensive (of course) but I really like that feature because most of the time, we are not in the bathroom with him so we can hear when he goes so we can go praise him.  I was going into it with a positive attitude that "Mr. Potty" as Logan calls him, was going to work.  This was it.  And to my surprise, I was right.  We got home and put him in his underwear and not 20 minutes later he said he had to go potty and ran to the bathroom.  He went about 4 times that night and one accident. But the accidents have been minimal so far and I finally think he understands the concept! We are so proud of him! He is still in a pull up at school, and at night, but they have been telling me he will go on the potty (pee pee only) at least 2 times during the day.  The next thing we need to work on is he thinks he has to completely remove his pants (not just pull them down) to sit on the potty and will throw a huge fit if we try to tell him any different.  Whatever, I will take it, he can learn that later.
Probably the most important thing I have learned being a parent: Every kid is different.  Don't compare your kid to others.  And I knew that it was going to be a tough battle with Logan, but we are getting there. We are just going to let the good times flow!

Going #2 on the potty.....stay tuned.....
